Shiobara Hot Springs Village - Southwest of Nasu

Shiobara Hot Springs Village - southwest of Nasu

Shiobara is the second largest hot spring area in Tochigi. This quiet mountain village became a popular destination for scholars during the Meiji Period. Shiobara-onsen-kyo Hot Spring Village is located slightly to the southwest of Nasu along the Shiobara Valley at the upper reaches of the Houki-gawa River, and is commonly known simply as "Shiobara's Eleven Hot Springs" due to the presence of eleven hot spring sources.

The valley, which offers spectacular views, particularly when the autumn tints are at their best, is also known for its two suspension bridges: the 320-meter Momiji-dai Suspension Bridge at the mouth of the Village, and the Mikaeri-no-Tsuribashi Suspension Bridge (literally "the bridge of retrospection") along the promenade. Mikaeri-no-taki Falls is a well-known scenic spot.

On January 1, 2005 Shiobara town (Shiobara-machi) was merged with the town of Nishinasuno, also from Nasu District, and the old city of Kuroiso, to form the new Nasushiobara city (Nasushiobara-shi).

Shiobara Onsen

Located on the Hokigawa River, Shiobara Onsen was discovered over 800 years ago. You’ll find eleven different hot springs, each with a different mineral content, throughout the resort area. The most popular outdoor onsens are located along the river. There are also several hiking and walking trails. For a thrill, take a stroll across one of the suspension bridges that cross the river. Momijidani O-tsuribasi is the longest suspension bridge in Japan of its kind. This is also a popular place for skiers and snowboarders in winter.

Literary Walk

There are fifty-five monuments throughout the city dedicated to renowned Japanese authors and their work. Take a walk around Myounji Temple and the ‘Forest of Literature.’ Other places of interest include the Ozaki Koyo Monument and the Natsume Soseki Monument. Ozaki Koyo was a famous author from the Meiji Period who wrote about a character in Shiobara, thus adding to the popularity of the town. Natsume Soseki also wrote during the Meiji Period. His widely read classics, "I Am a Cat" and "Bo-chan" have been enjoyed by generations.

Yuppo no Sato Hot Springs

Yuppo no Sato Hot Springs Spa in Shiobara Hot Springs Village is a top-class Japanese wooden footpath facility located at the center of the Shiobara Hot Spring Resort, which boasts abundant quantities of hot water. It consists of a gable-roofed administration building and a footpath gallery encircling an oval pond in the center. It is characterized by a structure that assembled from delicate wood elements with no large cross-section members.
